Guided Missile Performance Results

Below are the test results for Guided Missile Velocity, Manual Fire and Turning Performance.

Values apply to both AS-MIS and PZ-MIS variants.

Values are given as follows:
  • Time Interval in Seconds (s)
  • Distance in Meters (m)
  • Velocity in km/hour (km/hr)
Distance 100 200 300 400 500 600 700 800 900 1000 1100 1200 1300 1400 1500
Time 1.3 2.0 2.8 3.5 4.2 4.9 5.5 6.2 6.8 7.5 8.1 8.8 9.5 10.2 10.9
Velocity 288 480 480 480 514 554 554 554 554 554 554 514 514 514 514

Notice that after the missile passes the 1100m mark it slows down slightly.

Turning Performance
Obtaining accurate turning rates has proven to be quite difficult due to the numerous variables involved, target velocity and direction of movement relative to the projectile, speed of the projectile (which is directly related to distance the projectile has already travelled as shown above). In general, missiles appear to have an angular velocity of approximately 20°/sec when attempting to track a target travelling exactly perpendicular to the direction of travel of the projectile. The AS-MIS does appear to track slightly better/faster than the PZ-MIS variant, but for all practical purposes in a highly mobile battle, they should be regarded as identical.

Missile Warning Indicator
Guided Missiles will give a MISSILE indicator on a VT display if an assisted lock is acquired prior to weapon triggering. The MISSILE warning will continue to display until the weapon impacts on target or the ground, even if a chaff module has been deployed. This can lead to multiple unnecessary chaff modules being wasted as the "false" warning continues. The MISSILE warn indicator will stay lit even if a guided missile has "passed" the current target (via slidestep evasion) but the missile cannot turn and reacquire.

Missiles will maintain their homing lock even if the VT acquired targeting lock is disengaged.

Manual Targetting
Guided missiles fired without an acquired lock will continue on at a low altitude travelling in a straight trajectory. This opens up "manual aim freehand" options for the use of what would otherwise be a guided missile weapon. If a target is stationary or moving in a predicatable direction missiles can be fired without a lock, the advantage being no MISSILE or WARN indicators on the enemy display.
